“Iran has released on bail the last of the British embassy employees arrested in Tehran in connection with last month’s election protests.
Hossein Rassam – the embassy’s chief political analyst – was one of nine local embassy staff originally held.
He was charged with inciting the unrest over President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election and is due to stand trial. “

“Britain was accused yesterday of dumping toxic household and industrial waste in developing countries on two continents in breach of an international convention. The Government last night was considering tightening the enforcement of rules after the discovery of hazardous medical and electrical waste in Brazil and Ghana.
Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary, ordered an investigation into two British companies linked to 90 shipping containers containing 1,400 tonnes of waste. They included syringes, condoms and nappies. The companies that received the waste — sent from Felixstowe to three Brazilian ports — said that they had been expecting recyclable plastic…”

“Jacqui Smith has admitted she was not up to being Home Secretary – and should have been given some proper training before she was handed the job.
Ms Smith, who is likely to be remembered for claiming expenses for a porn film watched by her husband, said any success she had was down to luck rather than skill. She added: ‘When I became Home Secretary I’d never run a major organisation. I hope I did a good job but if I did it was more by luck than by any kind of development of skills. I think we should have been better trained.I think there should have been more induction.’
When asked by Total Politics magazine if she had worried she was not up to the job, she replied: ‘Every single time I was appointed to a ministerial job I thought that. I didn’t sleep for a week in 1999 when I got my ministerial job.’”
